Project Title: Future Sky Safety: subproject P7 – Mitigate risks of fire, smoke and fumes
Project Description:
The Future Sky Safety project was oriented on safety increase in civil air transport. The particular objective of the subproject P7 was to develop composite materials and structure to mitigate risks of fire.
Composite sandwich structures with an inorganic matrix and an inorganic core have been developed in the P7 subproject of FSS. The new composites were subject to a wide range of tests to verify their fire resistance. The composite system has proven a heat resistance to temperatures higher than 1000 ° C with virtually zero fumes occurrence.
As part of the FSS project, composite sandwich structures with an inorganic matrix and an inorganic core have been developed. The new composites we subjected to a wide range of tests to verify their fire resistance. The composite system has proven a heat resistance to temperatures higher than 1000 ° C with virtually zero fumes occurrence.
The topic of the subproject P7 was solved in cooperation with the German research institute DLR under the leadership of the Italian aerospace manufacturer – ALENIA, which will also be the main user of the results. VZLU was responsible for the analysis of composite materials based on fiberglass-reinforced geopolymer matrix. Activities included mainly production of samples, mechanical testing, fire tests according to FAR CS 25 (Appendix F – Part I., III). In addition, a structure demonstration of the interior aircraft part was built in cooperation with DLR, see picture.
Fire-resistant composite materials developed in VZLU can in the future replace some of the aircraft´s conventional organic composite parts. Using these newly developed technologies entirely different level of the operational safety can be achieved at the same or lower weight of the aircraft.
